5 New Takes on Old Wedding Traditions
We’ve compiled a list of 5 wedding traditions that are going out of style and suggestions of what couples are doing instead!
Father Daughter Dance
Try Father Daughter Shots instead! Don’t dance with your father? Don’t like being the center of attention for 3-4 minutes with your dad? This one’s for you! Get a bottle of your Dad’s favorite liquor and invite him up for a shot with you. It’s quick, semi-painless and a fun picture to have for the memory book. Plus, you and your Dad will enjoy not having to dance in front of everyone.
First Dance
Try a First Fight. Seriously, who ballroom dances anymore? Go for something more entertaining and realistic: a fight! Every marriage has one, make this one for the books! It’s entertaining for your guests and a great date night as your practice prior to your wedding. Especially with all the stress you both will have as you plan.
White Dress
The white dress is a symbol of the bride’s purity and chastity going into the marriage. Nowadays with many couples having lived together before getting married, it’s not a symbol that people take literally. Go for a dress that makes you feel beautiful! Gold, red, black, the options are endless! Plus, pure white can be terrible for photographs! Ivory is the best option if you want to stay close to traditional and still look amazing in photos.
Throwing Rice
There are tons of options nowadays from throwing rose petals and lavender to bubbles and sparkler exits. Rice was used to “shower the bride and groom with good luck and fortune”. But now it’s frowned upon since it can cause environmental hazards with birds. Go with a more environmentally friendly option like real rose petals or real bird seed!
Saving the top of your cake
Try eating it. Strangely enough this tradition stemmed from the idea that you would have a baby within a year of your marriage. By saving the cake, you ensured good luck AND you didn’t have to buy a celebratory cake for when you found out you were pregnant. Let’s be honest, saving the cake is difficult and by the end of the year it tastes disgusting. We should be offering it to our guests and reducing the costs of cake by doing so.
