Who doesn’t love a Funky Wedding?

We loved this disco inspired wedding as it wasn’t over the top disco themed but instead just a gorgeous intimate wedding with the closest of friends and family dancing to disco music.

We love the intimacy of weddings and when couples decide to just focus on their favorite parts of weddings. In this case, the bride spent a lot of time curating the music playlist but did not spend too much time on the decorations. The food was a simple order of pizza and doughnuts!

One of the most interesting parts of their wedding was the custom dresses that the bride wore for her day made by her best friend. During the ceremony she wore a classy short length A line dress that complemented her frame and during the reception, she changed to a funky wedding romper that was so much fun and flowed great with the overall fun of dancing!

There was so much fun and unique aspects to this wedding, be sure to check out this awesome Q and A with the bride and how she planned her perfect day!

Q: Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?

A: Funky-disco theme (mostly through the music) otherwise we weren’t really interested in putting a lot of time and effort into decorations and kept things as simple as possible

Q: Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?

A: The Bat Haus is a beautiful venue as is… we just added some mason jars with baby’s breath and tea light candles. That was it!

Q: What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?

A: Bought my bouquet at a flower shop that caught my eye while walking though midtown the day before (Putnam and Putnam) and loved it. My brother’s fiance and cousin’s wife graciously picked up a bunch of baby’s breath flowers the day of.

Q: Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?

A: I spent a lot of time and effort curating and cutting together the wedding playlist… made a bunch of cool little transitions by painstakingly editing mp3s in Audacity. Other than that, we kept it simple, low-key, and casual.

Q: Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.

A: My childhood best friend (Erica), who is a costume designer, made my dress.  We came up with the design by texting back and forth a few months before the wedding.  I wanted something fun and sequin-y but with a classic silhouette. She visited in May to go fabric shopping with me (Project Runway yaaaasss), do a fitting, and go to the mermaid parade and afterparty at House of Yes with me.  Robb wore a suit he already owned and used a swatch of my wedding dress fabric as a pocket square.

Q: How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.

A: We met in January 2013. We were both bus drivers for the campus shuttle service at the University of Iowa.  We had chemistry. I left him a children’s Valentine’s card (a tiger saying “I think you’re grrrrr-eat!”). He looked up my phone number in the online student directory and left me a voicemail that I didn’t check for several days. But I was really excited when I listened and realized it was my handsome next driver. I was 20 minutes late to our first date but he forgave me and we’ve been together ever since.  On our 6th anniversary he proposed while we were having coffee on our couch and hanging out with our cat, Louie. We got married 6 months later. It’s cute 🙂

Q: What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

A: Our ceremony which was officiated by my best friend.  It was a beautiful heartfelt moment that I’ll never forget. Can’t really describe it.
